Wiping Stains

Hand Wiped Cabinet Stains

A cabinet wiping stain is a type of wood stain that the user applies by hand and then wipes off depending on the desired look. This technique provides more control over the appearance and color while highlighting the wood's natural grain. These materials also provide a custom finish on woods that may absorb stains unevenly.

Working With Wiping Stains

A primary advantage of working with a wiping stain is the custom appearance. While these products don’t require highly specialized machinery to apply finishes, our team has artistic techniques.

Tools and Equipment

If you are finishing your purchase, use the appropriate protective gear to apply the wiping stain. Wear gloves to prevent your hands from staining and safety glasses or goggles to keep the stain from splashing in your eyes. A mask or respirator prevents inhaling potentially harmful fumes.

Application Process

Follow these steps to apply a wiping stain:

  • Prepare the surface by sanding it with medium-grit sandpaper and finishing it with fine-grit sandpaper.
  • Wipe with a tack cloth to remove dirt and debris.
  • Use a stir stick to mix the stain, and apply it with a foam brush or pad while following the direction of the wood grain.
  • Allow the stain to penetrate for several minutes, then wipe off the excess with a lint-free cloth.
  • Let the stain dry completely. Drying times can vary widely due to factors such as humidity and air temperature, so be sure the surface is thoroughly dry.
  • Apply additional coats if you prefer a deeper color.
  • Seal and protect the surface by applying a top coat.

Our experienced technicians work in small sections and apply consistent pressure to ensure an even application. Always ensure the drying area is adequately ventilated, and avoid overlapping to prevent double staining.
